I decided to do this front cover because I wanted it to look personal and show off her personality. As it is called 'Dear Diary' I felt that the CD should look personal because diary are personal to people, especailly girls.
Back Cover
I wanted the back to look like the inside of the diary and have the song listed inside so that it means that all the songs are very personal to the artist.
I want to have two locations for my video. The first location I want to be in a nice town center in London. This is where I want the pedestrians to hold up the white boards. This would give the feel that they are ordinary people and sense of togetherness because they are in a community.
My second location I want it to be in a open field where my artist can do her performance. This would give the feeling that she is free spirited.
An artist that is similar to mine is Keri Hilson. Keri Hilson sings also speaks to her target audience about things that they might go through but Keri Hilson targets a smaller audience which is women while my artist target is the same target audience which is females. Keri Hilson sings to her target audience like she is one of their 'girlfriends' giving them advice about their problems. Similar to my artist who is talks to her target audience like she is friends with them and understand what they are going through. With Keri Hilson single breaking point.
Single Cover
On the single cover, you see her in normal clothes with the picture being black and white looking sad and a bit vulnerable. This shows that even with her 'bad chick' image she still has them same sad emotional feelings like everybody else. It shows that she is just like any other woman. This is similar to my artist because on the tour poster the image is in black and white and the artist is looking sad and vulnerable. The artist is too wearing normal clothes to seem like she is just like her target audience. The feature that makes the poster look like it is targeted for females is that the writing is pink and black which are feminine colours.
Video - Breaking Point
In Keri Hilson's video you see her gathered with a whole lot of women walking with her, which looks like all of the women are all united together as one. This shows that she thinks that all women should come together with her and unite to fight bad men, like a cult or protest. Similar to my artist but jet subject is broader. In my music videos it's about not being afraid of who you are and letting people know that they are not scared of the judgements. She also brought a sense of community by having people from the public in the video to feel a sense of connection cult. It could also look like a protest because of the white boards with the writing on which was as similar style to Bob Dylan.
Ben Peters is a music video director who worked with people such as:
Tulisa
Alexandra Burk
Wiley
And many more...
When Ben Peter talk with my class and he taught us how many people are involved in making a music video. Before I thought that the director is the most important person when making films or videos but he taught me that everyone that is involved are as important as the director because without one of them it would be difficult to make the film or video. He also taught the difference between a music video and a short film. I found out that there is not that much difference between them except from the duration. He gave us videos to watch without the sound and tested us to see if we could guess what genre of music it might. We mostly got it wrong but it showed that we don't need to go by the stereotypical images to make a music video e.g. having half naked girls, gold chains, money and designer clothes to make a hip hop, rap video. This made me think outside the box for my own video. It made me want to make something different for my music video.
The video that he done with Wiley inspired me to do my music video.
Wiley's video
He said that doing Wiley's video was the cheapest video that he had done but it was really effective. He got random people to hold up a fake Ipad to there face. He also said that he only had ten minutes to spend with Wiley so he had to think out of the box to make a three minute music video especially when the artist is taking about nonsense. He said we shouldn't try and make a £10,000 music video and spend £10 on it because it wouldn't work. He then showed us some of his videos that he done and talked through how he had the ideas he came up with and he gave us his pre-post production from some of the his videos.
Ben Peters gave us some advice which was if we ever want to be involved in doing a music video we need to email a company who do music video to be a runner and then work beside someone who you want to end up being in your career. He said that you need to be passionate about doing the job and very flexible in days and hours and it could get you promoted until you get to be whet you want to be.
All in all I learnt so much from Ben Peters in only an hour and a half.
Song name Emeli Dances - My kind of love Jessie J - Who you are Lauryn Hill - Ex Factor Genre R'n'B/Soul Pop/R'n'B R'n'B/Soul Location O2 restaurants Cockfosters field (performance). White back drop Characters Kelly (artist) Dominic (artist boyfriend) Faith (artist) Pedestrians Lauren Smith (artist) Audience Black female aged 16 to 35 middle class Most females aged 16 to 25. Middle class. Mostly females aged 16 to 37. Middle class Narrative Kelly makes a surprise dinner for Dominic but he doesn't arrive home. Kelly gets worried about Dominic and calls him but he doesn't answer his phone. She thinks that he stood her up or he is cheating on her with someone else but unknowingly to her he is actually gets run over by a car rushing home from working late. Faith is performing in the middle of the field singing the song. The pedestrians hold up boards with some of the lyrics on them in in a town centre. Lauren does black and white performance.
The gender of my target audience is mostly females because it is an empowering song about to not be afraid of who you are, which a lot of females will be insecure about how they look and how they come across to people. It also appeals to females because they can look at the artist as a role model. Also the artist is dressed up very casually and not with designer clothes so the target audience can feel like the artist is not a special or a celebrity, she is just like them. This would make the target audience feel more closer and like a friend to the artist. Usually females would like a friend to share their feeling to so they will close because it seem that the artist knows exactly what they are going through.
The race of the target audience would be all races as the music video features people in the public that are from a lot of different cultures to give the message that the song applies to everyone no matter who you are. Also the genre of the music is pop which is listened by a lot of variety of people.
The age of the target audience is between 14-25 years old. The reason for this is that the artist is quite young and most females would have these insecurities at this age when they are trying to find out who they are and knowing what the difficulties of growing up, making new friends at a big school. The song can apply to anything in someones life. It can relate to someone who think they are ugly, to someone who is getting bullied at school or to someone who has a disability.
The class of the target audience is middle class to working class. I don't think it appeal to upper class because stereotypically they would listen to classical music and if they had a problem they would most likely to go to therapy or consoling.
The concept behind the idea was to make the video look like a inspirational, happy, motivational video. I watched the actual video of Jessie J 'Who You Are' and I really liked the song but the video didn't do any justice for it and made me like the song less then I used to. Before I watched the video I thought how the song made me feel. I felt like she was speaking to me like she was one of my friends who telling me I am better then what I think I am and to not change who I am. When I listening to the song I felt that the song can relate to anything in a persons life. I thought it could relate to someone being bullied, someone who feels that they are ugly or someone who has a disability. I wanted the artist to be in a big open field to get the feeling of space and freedom. Also I wanted to make the audience feel that they can concur the world and give them the confidence and power.
I was in a group where we had to do a preliminary task. The theme was F**k education and we had use the song 'The F-WORD' by Babybird. As the song was very loud and noisy, we wanted that to be our theme so we wanted to show that the school was out of control to reflect the song. At the beginning of the video we showed that the students were in sync by them turning the page at the same time at the same page to show that they are controlled by the school. One of the pupils decided to disrupt the controlled students by throwing their books on the floor. Then wrote f**k education on the board. This sparked the starting of the chaotic behavior of the school. We then filmed some of the students at the school saying f**k education to the camera. We made it look like we just captured them while they were creating havoc. We made it look weird to make the video chaotic by having two people go around the revolving doors and we also speed the clip up. We included a clip from a police officer putting his hand out towards the camera like he was shielding himself. We wanted to show that the school couldn't be controlled and even the police can't handle it. In the preliminary task, I learnt that emotion does emphasis what the meaning of the video is. I also learnt that camera shots and angles are very important. The camera shots and angles also emphasis the emotion of the video. For example in our preliminary task we shot one student writing on f**k education on pieces of paper on the school bulletin board. We shot that clip blurry and and had the camera at its' side to show chaos and that the college is out of control. We showed chaos by having students throwing paper all over the school. This shows that they are breaking the rules and that they are not controlled anymore. At the end of the video we had a clip of me throwing the a bunch of paper at the camera. We done this to make it seem like the college was so out of control the it turned on the audience, like I was throwing the bunch of papers at the audience. This would make the audience feel included even though it is a negative action.
